Changing of the Seasons
Sometimes I still have a hard time wrapping my mind around the reality that I am living in Thailand. It is at those moments when I really look around me in awe and tell myself “Yep, you are in Thailand”. (I think I talk to myself more than before, perhaps as a way to keep from forgetting English through lack of use.)
Sure, I have given up a lot of minor conveniences, I have no clue what is going on around me because I STILL do not understand the language, nor can I read signs. The weather can be extreme. Hot Season can be unbearable at first, but you adjust. My silver lining is being able to run around in comfortable shorts and sleeveless blouses year round.
Rainy season is upon is. Time for sometimes dramatic, often romantic raging rains and wondrous sound and light shows in the skies. Always a freshness in the air after a good rain.
With the end of the hot season came the harvesting of the rice. It has been wonderful watching the growing stages of rice. Not so nice putting up the smoke from the burning rice fields.
Growing Stages of Rice
The turning of the seasons has brought about a radical change to our landscape. Over a three week period the fields of rice were cleared which opened up huge new fields for Jake to explore. Soon thereafter the burning of the rice fields began, small scattered sections on a daily basis.
Slowly the smoldering remains closed off the fields for exploration, and have now filled up with water.
New growth is emerging, the landscape is once again turning into a pleasing sight. Our Pond has filled back up, and I am ready for the new season to begin.
